The Polyester Illusion

Luxury has become very skilled at selling plastic as if it were refinement.

Women are taught to look at the silhouette, follow the logo, trust the image, and stop there. The surface is polished so well that the material underneath barely enters the conversation. Yet the truth of a garment lives in the matter of it, and once you start paying attention, a lot of what passes for premium begins to look thin.

Polyester is now one of the dominant fibers in global textile production. It is easy to produce, easy to market, and easy to mistake for value when it is cut and photographed well. It can be sold as technical, practical, wrinkle resistant, modern. All of that language works because it flatters convenience. It makes compromise sound like progress.

But polyester is still petroleum made wearable.
